Episode 14

So I realized that I have been remiss in my duties as the wife of writer/creator. My husband’s 3rd book came out during the Christmas Madness, and I didn’t even mention it. So I would like to direct your attention to PX! Book 2: In the Service of the Queen.

PX Book 02
House of Mystery
New Release

House of Mystery Vol 01 Written by Matthew Sturges and Bill Willingham; Art by Luca Rossi, Ross Campbell, Sean Murphy, Zachary Baldus, Steve Rolston and Jill Thompson; Cover by Sam Weber

I really enjoyed this an awful lot. House of Mystery features layered story telling, varied and excellent art and a compelling connective tale. Also, the Bill Willingham story totally gave me nightmares, so hurray for that.

Punisher Circle of Blood

Marvel

Punisher: Circle of Blood Written by Steven Grant, Pencils by Mike Zeck

I enjoyed this way more than I thought I would. I still prefer the Marvel Knights run though.

Young Liars
Vertigo

Young Liars Vol 01 Story and Art by David Lapham

After reading this, I feel reinforced in my belief that David Lapham hates everyone. Otherwise this was fun, if totally insane.

Captive Hearts

Tokyopop

Captive Hearts Vol 01 Matsuri Hino

This work, from the creator of Meru Puri and Vampire Knight is just as cute, angsty and well executed as you would expect. I really liked it, and I look forward to the second book once I get it back in stock.

Thanks again, and if you have requests, suggestions or comments, just let me know.

Wow, episode 2 already?

We open this week with a bit of an intervention:
Watchmen Cover
Classic DC

The Watchmen by Alan Moore, Art by Dave Gibbons

This is a good book. A classic, and one that I do think all comics readers should spend some time with at some point. I just don’t think this is a good intro to graphic novels for a beginner, and I think a lot of the people buying it right now fit into that category

Flight Cover

Random House

Flight Vol 05 – Edited by Kazu Kibuishi

This is a short story anthology that lives up to its predecessors. This book has a lot of stories in it by a very eclectic group of creators. I selected a few of my favorites to talk about, but it was a challenge to pick. My absolute favorite from this book is the story “Changeling” by Sarah Mensinga. If you have a chance, take a peek at her galleries.

Birds of Prey Vol 02 Cover
DC

Birds of Prey : Sensei and Student – Writer Gail Simone, Pencils Ed Benes, Alex Lei, Michael Golden, Joe Bennett, Cliff Richards, Covers Greg Land

I love love love this book. It is a lot of fun, beautifully drawn, and gives me an opportunity to invoke The Rule . If you haven’t had the pleasure of reading Allison Bechdel, start here, then spend some time digging through the archives over at Dykes to Watch Out For. This book also features covers by Greg Land, who has a reputation for tracing porn for reference. Just take a look at Black Canary there!

Bride o/t Water God 01 Cover

Dark Horse

Bride of the Watergod Vol 01 By Mi-Kyung Yun

I got way more out of this book than I expected. This is an ongoing manhwa series, and I intend to continue following it. If the subsequent books are as good as the first, I will be very happy. Beautiful art with a sweet fairy-tale story.

Hello

Welcome to my little corner of the nerdosphere. I am proud to present to the first episode in a continuing series on comics. My name is Angela, and I have the incredibly cool job of comic book shop manager. That means that I get to read stuff that would not otherwise cross my path. It has also lead to a lot of social observation (nerdspotting) and odd interactions. At least once a month some guy tells me, with shock and a little disgust “Girls don’t read comics!” and “How can you work here? Do you even read this stuff!?”

Yes. Yes, I do. And some of it is really good.

So this week we are covering 4 titles that I can all highly recommend:

Coraline Cover
New Release:

Coraline by Neil Gaiman, Adapted and Illustrated by P. Craig Russell
An excellent, creepy book for young and old alike.

Fables Cover

Vertigo

Fables Vol 01 , Writer Bill Willingham, Pencils Lan Medina, Steve Leialoha and Craig Hamilton
One of the best titles in circulation today.

Astonishing X-Men Cover
Marvel

Astonishing X-men Vol 01 Writer Joss Whedon, Pencils John Cassaday
Joss Whedon really knows how to write complex female characters. I love his Kitty Pride.

BattleAngel Cover

Viz

Battle Angel Alita Vol 01 Yukito Kishiro
I’m such a dork, I named my cat after this one.
