Episode 57

Running behind this week, but better late than never.  I had a great week in Bat Books, but the winner for me was Talon #0 which actually came out a couple of weeks ago.  Also, new issue of The Massive was an excellent example of a story passing the Bechdel Test.  If it keeps up with this kind of storytelling, I’m going to have to send it back to the front of the recommended stack.

Episode 55

Lots of fun stuff this week, but the 2 big winners for me were Sword of Sorcery and Ghost.

When I was a kid, I used to be able to go up to the Git-N-Go by my Gramma’s house and get Amethyst comics.  I loved these and then they were just gone, and I forgot about them.  Then a couple of years ago, a lady came in and sold in her whole collection. She didn’t have all of them, but she had most of them and now I have them. I was amazed at how Girl Power these were even after all these years.  So I was super excited to see that they were bringing her back, even if just for a bit.  I really liked this issue. It was darker than I was expecting, but still really cool.  I can’t wait to read more.  Oh! And that’s not even mentioning the Beowulf stuff which I also thought was super cool.  I have never read that character before, so I am really interested to see where it goes.

Next we have Ghost from Dark Horse.  This is also billed as a reboot, and I have not read the old stuff. That said, I really liked this.  It’s a cool supernatural/scifi story with interesting characters.  I love the art, and I especially love the way the title character is mostly silent, so her actions are very eloquently drawn.  As she discovers she is solid, she reaches out and touches a book, and you can see her puzzlement in the crinkling of her brow.  Very subtle, but really effective.  I just wish I had more of these in the store to hand-sell.

Otherwise we had lots of good stuff and one disappointment.  I really liked the Justice League #0 because it was all Shazam and he is almost my whole reason for reading Justice League right now.  Revival is continuing to be excellent with #3, and Batwoman #0 was good if sort of far-fetched.  My disappointment was with The Womanthology Space #1.  While it was mostly pretty ok, I was really sad that not a single story in it passes the Bechdel Test. I mean, a whole collection of short stories by all women creators and not even one?  Weird.  Weird and sad.

This coming week should be a lot of fun. Lots of new #0s and a new National Comics One-Shot that looks kind of cool.  Yay!

Episode 50

Episode 50! Welcome new listeners and thank you to my regulars!

20120821-234513.jpgRorschach #1 Story by Brian Azzarello, Art by Lee Bermejo.
Man. I was not really expecting to like this one. Rorschach is a fan-favorite character and this was a hotly anticipated title, but I was really worried that I wouldn’t like it and I would find myself in the minority. I am relieved to say that I thought this was pretty cool. The art and story worked very well together to create this dysfunctional noir setting for the lead character, and it teases at a CSI style serial killer storyline that I really want to read.

In the final issue in the first arc of what might be the best series this year we get a fantastic space ship and a fun cliffhanger. I have enjoyed every installment of this series, but this might be my favorite. Now I just have to wait till November for it to pick back up.

20120823-215606.jpgRevival #2 Tim Seeley and Mike Norton.

While I think the first issue was a little more powerful, this one is still going strong. I can’t wait to see where this story goes.

Hey!  This week was my birthday!  I am now a little bit older again.  I had a big BBQ at my house on Saturday, which meant that the podcast that I recorded at work on Friday did not get dealt with until now.  Sorry about that.

I read the Bat universe stuff for this episode and was overall pretty darn happy.  I really liked Catwoman, even if that makes me a bad feminist.  I also understand the anger that Starfire is drawing.  I mean really, does her armor need nipples?  REALLY?

Other than that though, I actually enjoyed that comic, sort of in spite of the characters.

I like the new Batman a lot, though it was sort of darker than I was expecting.  There is talk about how this new reboot is more violent in general than the age ratings would have you think.  I sort of have to agree, and though I liked the story and the art, I do feel that it really pushes that T rating

Birds of Prey I’ll have to wait and see on.  I really liked the previous series, but with all these new characters, I’m having trouble caring so far.  Fingers crossed.

Also, not in the Bat-o-verse, but I read the new Wonder Woman.  And dug it.  I really need to read more Brian Azzarello.  This story hooks me instantly, and I can’t wait for the next issue.

Ok, bedtime looms.  I am really excited about this coming week’s releases though. One of the titles I have been looking forward to the most, Justice League Dark, is coming as well as All Star Western, Superman, Aquaman, and a bunch of other pretty cool looking stuff.  Talk to you soon

So I’m a couple of days late on this update, It was recorded on Fri the 9th.

First of all, my trip to Minnesota was very nice.  Except for the food poisoning.  That meant no RenFest, and no comic shops.  The day that we were going to spend doing that we were actually so sick that all we did was sleep and complain.  And puke.
After that excitement I was glad to get a chance to go in before my shift and read.  I read ALL THE NEW STUFF and I sort of quickly talk through the pile in  this weeks podcast.

My big favorite was Animal Man.  I loved it, and I can’t wait to read more.  I walked into that one knowing that I like the writer and I like the character, so I was ready to dig the book.  It was so much darker and creepier than I was expecting.  Happiness.

I also really liked Batgirl and after I recorded this, I spent some time talking to my co-worker Heather.  I don’t want to speak for her, but she told me that she was really mad.  She loves Oracle: Barbara Gordon the strong, mature woman who kicks butt in spite of her limitations.  She was angry that they took away Barbara’s inner strength and power and made her sort of rough and unsure.  I can totally see that perspective, and I am willing to bet that it is one that a lot of fans share.  I am ok with it though.  I will really miss Oracle.  I love that character so much.  But I’m also excited about how fresh and exhilarated Babs was to fight bad guys in her cape again.  Gail Simone really knows and cares for this character, so I think she’s in good hands.  I will definitely keep reading to see what happens.

All in all I read more stuff that I liked than that I didn’t.  The reboot is working for me.  How about you guys?
