Episode 58

What a busy couple of weeks!  We moved the store, or at least did all the heavy lifting.  Things are still settling into place and it’s nowhere near where we want it.  I find that I am super frustrated by my restricted availability.  I would love to stay late and pull extra shifts to get the work done, but the rest of my life just does not allow for it.  Manager Carly and Assistant Manager Gabe are kicking butt and doing great work. We’ll get it whipped into shape in no time.

Also, the nerdosphere is having another meltdown over the way pretty (or “con hot” as Tony Harris put it) girls are showing the temerity to dress up in costumes and invade the sovereign space of the Real Nerd.  I swear we just went through this!  I tried not to get all mad on the podcast, but I kind of do anyway.  The short version is this:

This thing that we have.  This “nerd space”.  This is not a private club.  No one gets to say who can join and who isn’t nerdy enough.  Grow up.

The long version is much more ranty, but that distills it pretty well I think.

Other than that it was a big comic catch up week.  I read a ton of mostly DC stuff.  There were some winners and some indifferent things.  Nothing was really bad, but there was a lot of “meh” for me this week.  Lot 13 was my big winner though.  I really enjoyed the creepiness of it and I felt that it was a good ground laying first issue.

Sorry about last week.  Life has been crazy busy, but lots of fun. Unfortunately that means that my reading time is almost nonexistent.  I was able to get in Sword of Sorcery #1 and Talon #1.  That is about it.  I really liked them both and am excited to keep reading.

Running behind this week, but better late than never.  I had a great week in Bat Books, but the winner for me was Talon #0 which actually came out a couple of weeks ago.  Also, new issue of The Massive was an excellent example of a story passing the Bechdel Test.  If it keeps up with this kind of storytelling, I’m going to have to send it back to the front of the recommended stack.

The last campfire of the season. Today has been a horrendous day, but now it is over, and I have whisky, chocolate and firelight. Practically perfect. So here is the podcast that I recorded this morning. 20121012-203813.jpg

So I don’t know how I have managed to not plug this yet, but check out what my friend Manny is up to!

Manny Trembley, AKA Art Monkey, co-creator/illustrator of PX! and Sam Noir Samurai Detective is Kickstarting a new kids’ project called Martin Monsterman.  It tells the story of guy who gets turned into a different monster every day.  If you go over to his Kickstarter page, he has a couple of sample pages up.  I think little boys reading this will think the werewolf bit is awesome.

He was also featured at Comic Book Resources on their Kickstand Column. He has a quote there that I just love, both as a parent and as a retailer: “A lot of products masquerading as kids books carry a cynicism and perspective that caters to adults. I feel that there is not enough content that celebrates dreaming and the belief people are made for adventure and fun!”

So go support an awesome guy and his cool ideas.  We need more stuff like this out there.
