So this is to announce Girls Don’t Read Comics’ official migration to wordpress. Things should look pretty familiar, but now we have some new toys to play with.
Also, wow. Heck of a week huh? I took Monday off of work for my anniversary, and look what happens. Disney buys Marvel, and Tokyopop loses their license to the Kodansha titles. While the first sounds scarier, the second one actually directly affects me as a retailer.
A lot of people are worried about the Disney thing. I really don’t expect to see any real difference at street level. I don’t believe for a second that the Punisher Max series will get canceled. I don’t think we are going to see Micky Mouse/Spider-man comics. And I don’t think that comics as we know it will come to an end. The Mouse is all about the money after all, and right now if it works, then they won’t go out of their way to break it.
I ‘m not going to discuss this at length here, because lots of people are doing so excellently out in the interwebs. Let’s just say that I’m not panicking.
As for the Tokyopop/Kodansha thing, I printed out the 772 item long Out Of Print list from Tokyopop and looked it over. The list is made up mostly of things that I either have not been able to order for a long time, or things that have been aging on my shelves for months. I’m not broken-hearted, especially since Del Rey and Dark Horse are picking up some of the more desirable titles. It does make me wonder about the long term viability of Tokyopop. First they ax all of their OEL titles, now they lose most of the Japanese ones? Dang.
Anyway, now that my blog transfer seems mostly done, I should be able to get back to the important business of reading comics, and then telling you what I think of them. It looks like I have some new podcast tools at my disposal here at wordpress, so bear with me as I take them for a spin over the next couple of days.
