Episode 02 : We Need To Talk…

Wow, episode 2 already?

We open this week with a bit of an intervention:
Watchmen Cover
Classic DC

The Watchmen by Alan Moore, Art by Dave Gibbons

This is a good book. A classic, and one that I do think all comics readers should spend some time with at some point. I just don’t think this is a good intro to graphic novels for a beginner, and I think a lot of the people buying it right now fit into that category

Flight Cover

Random House

Flight Vol 05 – Edited by Kazu Kibuishi

This is a short story anthology that lives up to its predecessors. This book has a lot of stories in it by a very eclectic group of creators. I selected a few of my favorites to talk about, but it was a challenge to pick. My absolute favorite from this book is the story “Changeling” by Sarah Mensinga. If you have a chance, take a peek at her galleries.

Birds of Prey Vol 02 Cover
DC

Birds of Prey : Sensei and Student – Writer Gail Simone, Pencils Ed Benes, Alex Lei, Michael Golden, Joe Bennett, Cliff Richards, Covers Greg Land

I love love love this book. It is a lot of fun, beautifully drawn, and gives me an opportunity to invoke The Rule . If you haven’t had the pleasure of reading Allison Bechdel, start here, then spend some time digging through the archives over at Dykes to Watch Out For. This book also features covers by Greg Land, who has a reputation for tracing porn for reference. Just take a look at Black Canary there!

Bride o/t Water God 01 Cover

Dark Horse

Bride of the Watergod Vol 01 By Mi-Kyung Yun

I got way more out of this book than I expected. This is an ongoing manhwa series, and I intend to continue following it. If the subsequent books are as good as the first, I will be very happy. Beautiful art with a sweet fairy-tale story.

I like your show so far, its good to hear a local podcast on comics.
Since I'm a curious guy about girls who do read comics, you should talk a little bit about your experiences in the shop more. I'm sure you have some stories to tell about the girls who frequent the comic book shop, the weird guys, the normal guys, the people you wouldn't expect to be a comic fan.. There has to be some great anecdotes 🙂

Hey! Thanks for listening. You might be the very first person outside my immediate family and the other Comic Book Shop Folks. I have been thinking about including some of the anecdotes (and there are some good ones) but I don't want to alienate any of my customers by singling them out. I will give it some thought though. I did have a guy come in and ask me to marry him. As it was my husband's birthday, I had to say no.
